The stuff i used was lighter than the Andreani recommended but i was still riding with the compression adjuster full out or near to it. Before i went through the process i found a couple of threads on different forums alerting me to this and it was the compression leg that needs a much lighter oil than the rebound.
Ohlins branded oil as a one size fits all, never gonna happen. Andreani, regardless of what bike you are fitting their cartridges to, tell you to use a particular wt. Now that I've seen that the Bel-ray fork oil is mineral (as per the website above), I might end up using another brand which is synthetic because I believe synthetic oil is less subject to shearing, so it should keep its viscosity longer.
Mixing 50% of 10W (cSt 33) and 15W (cSt 53) results in a cSt of 41.65 which would be 11.9W oil, which is good enough for me (I'm relatively light so getting a slightly thicker oil than specified is better). I've graphed these points and it seems like cSt = 3.5 x W I only consider cSt at 40 degrees C because it is for a fork oil application and it should not heat up too much unlike the engine. I'm going to show you how I sorted this out. what if I don't want/can't use the BMW oil ? Can I mix other oils to get the right viscosity ? That exotic 11.5W oil seems to be a marketing technique to lock people into buying BMW fork oil.
